A WEDDING PARTY CAUGHT IN THE SNOW.
From our Home files we learn that, on the occasion of the recent snowstorm, there was a romantic and wellnigh tragic adventure at a farm on the Wiltshire Downs, near Warminster. A wedding-party was caught in the snow, and imprisoned for almost a week. Friends had come from far and near, all in their Sunday best and not too warmly clad; the ceremony had been performed at a distant church, and the party had somehow or other got back to the deserted farm to breakfast when the feasting was interrupted by the ominous declaration that the toads were impassable, and that they were all snowed in. To separate that night was imposssble, and all looked forward to the morrow. Matters were worse than before, and bride, bridegroom, bridesmaids, best men, sisters, cousins, and aunts had to face inevitable captivity. For some time provisions held out, but at last the provided marriage feast was utterly consumed ; amusements palled upon the prisoners, they were tired of dancing, everyone had told every story he knew to keep up the spirits of the guests, changes of raiment wfere deemed absolutely necessary, the space was too confined for flirtation, an ominous depression induced by daily and scanty rations of bread and bacon supervened ; and just as starvation was just staring them all in the face a thaw set in, and a salwart pioneer headed as merry a “ wedding march” as ever trudged across the snow in search of hope and home.
