VOLUNTEER RIFLE MATCH.

KUMARA Y. HOKITIKA. The return rifle match between Kumara and Hokitika took place yesterday at the Hokitika range. The local team arrived there at about half-past nine o’clock. The light on the range was very changeable at first, puzzling the Kumara men, who were 21 points behind. After a hard struggle and good shooting, however, our local contingent succeeded in the afternoon in recovering the points lost and eventually won the match by 10 points. The following are the scores :

Oliver ... 18 20 644 Grand total 627 The conditions were the same as in the last match, an account of which appeared in Saturday’s issue, and £5 a-side, which was distributed in prizes, as follows : —Winning team, Kumara, £2 ; Best shot at 200 yards, Vol. Stennard, Kumara, (25), 10s; at 400 yards, Vol. Simmons, Kumara, (27), 10s; at 500 yards, Yol. Stevens, Hokitika, (24), 10s. The best aggregates at the three ranges were—Lieut. Learmonth, Hokitika, first prize, £2 10s; second, Vol. Stennard, £2 ; third, Vol. Coutts, Kumara, £1 ; fourth, SubLieut. Linstrom, Hokitika, 10s; fifth, Sergeant Davies, Kumara, 10s. So the Kumara te*m again took the lion’s share of the money—£6 10s out of the £lO. On their return home the Kumara team were very hospitably treated by an indefatigable local Volunteer, who entertained them to a genuine good supper.
