VOLUNTEER RIFLE MATCH.
Some days ago a match was arranged to be fired on the Kumara rifle range between ten men of the Grey Rifle Rangers and an equal number of the Hokitika or First Westland Rifles; the match to take place on Good Friday. The Kumara Contingent, not liking to be mere spectators of the affair on their own range, challenged both companies; and their offer was accepted. Each company was to contribute £5 iu money towards prizes for those who proved themselves best scorers, and by Thursday last, the arrangements were all supposed to be completed, when on that day a letter from the Grey Rangers stated that for " various causes" they would not be able to get together their men on Good Friday, but that they would be able and willing to compete with the Kumara team at the Grey mouth range on Easter Monday, on the same conditions. At half-past nine o'clock yesterday morning, the Hokitika team arrived, and, rather unexpectedly, alighted at the junction of Union street with the Main Road, proceeding straight to the rifle range. The Kumara team, who were paradiug in towu in readiness to meet their visi-
