THE EDUCATION RESERVE QUESTION.

[to the editor.] Sir—A new word has recently been imported into the English language; and I do not see why we should not use it as well as Others. The word “ Boycott” is now known far and wide; and if ever there was occasion to put it into practical operation such ati opportunity now presents itself. Hokitika, as represented by its leading tnen, the School Commissioners, has for years past been endeavoring to crush this district out of existence; and a new attempt is now being made to drive the miners away. My proposal is to “ Boycott” these people, and everyone connected with them. Let the servants on the Education Reserve do this, and we shall soon see a change for the better; Hokitika haa been slowly, but surely going to the dogs for a long while; and this has to some considerable extent been caused by the miserable petty jealousies of its inhabitants; Greymouth, on the contrary, has always presented an united front whenever any matter of public interest had to be fought out. We have no tie which binds us to Hokitika, and the sooner we cut the painter the better it will be for us. Seventeen ships alongside of the Greymouth wharf, and not one iii Hokitika—that will show which is the cheapest market to buy in. I hope that the remarks which I have made will cause discussion on the subject,— I am, sir* yours &c., SRAUUHRAUN; April 11, 1881.
