The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. THURSDAY, APRIL 7, 1881.

The Christchnreh coach .arrived in duo time yesterday afternoon, and the East Coast mails were promptly delivered in town. The Wanaka, with the incoming San Francisco mails, should have reached Nelson from New Plymouth during last night. It U intended that the Murray,

which left Greymouth yesterday afternoon, shall, as soon as possible after her arrival at Nelson, leave again for Coast ports, with the transhipped mails from the northern steamer. It will therefore be Saturday or Sunday before we can expect the mail at Kumara. To-night, at the Theatre Royal, the talented actors of the Comedy and Burlesque C "inpany make their reappearance, when will be produced for the first time in Kumara Dion Boucicault's great Irish drama "The Shaughraun." This original play met with great success in England and Australia, and in New York it had a run of 160 nights. For its production on the Kumara stage entirely new and magnificent scenery has been painted by Mr Hall, and all the choral and other effects in the Great Wake Scene are promised, the Gate Tower, and the ruins of St. Bridget's Abbey; In consequence of the great length of its production, it will constitute the night's entertainment, and doubtless a great treat is in store for those who come to witness its performance. Tenders for supplying firewood to the Kumara State School for three months are invited to be sent to the honorary secretary before noon on Wednesday next; We may remind those persons who ever and anon are desirous of trying their fortunes in having "ahorse in" that Gilbert Stewart's consultation on the Sydney Gold Cup will be drawn now in a few days; and it will be necessary to make application for tickets, or in sweeps (which are drawn nightly at the old Clarendon Hotel), if they wish to have a show of winning any of the coveted amounts which appear in the advertisement. Mr Collins, Reuter's agent in Melbourne, sends to the Argus the following memorandum : —"As an instance of rapid telegraphing, it is perhaps worthy of being noted that the news of the assassination of the Czar was generally known in the Australian colonies several hours before it could appear in print in the English journals. Reuter's telegram containing the announcement was despatched from London at twenty-five minutes to 9 p.m. on Sunday. It reached the Melbourne Telegraph office at four minutes past 9 a.m. on Monday, thus occupying two hours forty-nine minutes only in transmission, allowing for the difference of time. It was published or posted outside the offices of the Melbourne papers by a quarter-past 10 a.m., equivalent to twenty-five minutes to 1 a.m. in London. As no paper is published in England on Sunday night, it thus appears that the news was made known in Australia at least four or five hours before it could be read by the public at home,," A scheme for the settlement of commer* cial disputes by means of a Gourt of Arbitration has been embodied in a proposition which was recently laid before the Manchester Chamber of Commerce. It is intended to settle all disputes and differences relating to trade, manufactures, and commerce by arbitrators selected by the Chamber, the objects being to save costs and to secure the adjustment of all such disputes by men possessed of a full knowledge of the matters referred to them. Mrs Cooney invites her friends and the public generally to a ball at Butler's Hotel, to-morrow night. For list of prizes in a grand art-union at Hokitika see fourth page.—[Advt.] To those in search of merriment, visit S. S. Pollock's, and obtain the great Irish song "The Babies in our Block," or "Little Sally Waters"; price sixpence. [Advt.]
