WAIMEA WATER-RACE.
PUBLIC MEETINGS AT GOLDSBORO UGH AND STAFFORD TOWN. In accordance with an announcement made by the County Chairman, meetings were held last evening a| Goldsborongh and Stafford Town lif connection with the damage done by the late flood to the Waimea Waterrace. The attendance at both meetings was very large, Mr M'Whirter, M,C.C.; being in the chair at Goldsborongh, while Mr Byrne occupied a similar, position in Stafford Town. The following resolutions were Carried at the meeting at Goldsborongh : Mr Davidson proposed, and MiFell seconded—“ That this meeting would respectfully urge upon the Government the absolute necessity of at once, undertaking the repairs to the Waimea water-race. Also that, owing to the want of water, the miners are thrown out ot employment, thereby suffering serious losses themselves, and certainly a loss to the colony.’' Mr Stewart moved and Mr Fallon seconded—“ That the Minister of Public Works be informed that the miners of the Stafford district who are taking water from the Government water-race are prepared to supply labor to do the repairs necessitated by the late flood; and are willing that the amount due to them should be credited to their water account.” Mr Burgess moved and Mr Barry seconded—“ That the resolution agreed to by the meeting be forwarded by the chairman to the Government, and an early reply requested ; also that the members for the distiict be requested to assist the movement ; and also, that Mr Gisborne be asked to give his aid in assisting us as far as lies in his power.” At Stafford Town the resolutions carried unanimously were as follow ; Mr Martin proposed and Mr Masciarini seconded—“ That this meeting would respectfully urge upon the Government the absolute necessity of at once undertaking the repairs to the Waimea Water-race; also that owing to the want of water the miners are out of employment, thereby suffering serious losses themselves, and entailing
a loss upon the colony. Farther, that the sum of £SO expended, would repair the race as far as Goldsborough to the end of Brandi B.” Mr Burgess moved and Mr Lock seconded—“ That the resolutions agreed to by this meeting be forwarded by the Chairman to the Government, and art early reply requested ; also that the members for the district be requested to assist the movement.” Mr S. Honey proposed and Mr Byrne seconded “That the Minister of Public Works be informed that there are fifty men waiting for water who are willing to repair the race as far as Branch B, and allow the amount to be paid hi water.”
