The entries for the Ram and Ewe Fair closed this afternoon. Over 1600 entries have been received. The fair promises to be a great success. Ab Foo, Chinese cook of the barque Mabel, was fined £9 at the Police Court, Lyttelton, to-day, for attempting to smuggle four boxes of cigars. Auckland, March 19. Dr. and Mrs Harvey, master and matron of the Home for Neglected Children, have written to the Committee, asking for a reconsideration of the recent notice terminating their engagements. Mr Horne applied to Judge Richmond in Chambers for authority under the Fraudulent Debtor’s Act to prosecute John Purkell, an absconding debtor. The object of the application was that the costs of the prosecution might be paid out of the funds set apart for the purpose. The Judge deferred the consideration of the application, as he had great repugnancy to acting in a case in which he would try the prisoner.
