[new ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Christchurch, March 12. At the banquet to the Governor tonight, the Governor said that, though accustomed in Crown Colonies to absolute power he considered the present Government of the Colony the only one suitable for English communities where the power is resting with tire people. The Governor’s duty was to oil the machine of the Government, so that it ran easily. He was interested in Canterbury, as he had known its founders. He thought the depression jras one temporary, as from the resources of the Colony he felt sure of future prosperity. Auckland, March 11 William Watson, fireman, injured by machinery on the Hawea on Wednesday, is dead. The Auckland Amateur Club’s athletic sports passed off snccessfully. At the native meeting tit Waitangij Bay of Islands, to come off on the 23rd* a row is expected, several grievances existing between the races in the district. The chief, Paul, issued circulars convening a third Maori Parliament. There are 18 subjects on the order* paper, including confiscated lands.
