A delegate is at present in Christchurch on a tour of inspection for the Yorkshire farmers, similar to that undei taken by Grant and .Foster on behalf of the Lincolnshire men. His name is Herring. O’Connor will leave Christchurch on March 25, to inspect Thornton and Browne’s West Coast route. At a meeting held to-day, re receiving the Governor, two or three schemes were proposed, and it was decided to give him a public dinner. One gentleman told the Mayor (Gapes), plainly, that as he had a salary of £3OO a-yeal‘ to sustain his dignity, he ought to have provided a dinner himself instead of leaving others to decide. Dunedin,. March 8. Over 700 payments of Property Tax were made in Dunedin to-day. Two of the Bundoora yearlings, the Lurline colt and Coquette, will be sent hack to Melbourne, having been sold there tor five hundred guineas each. Auckland, March 8. The Central Waikato Hotel; Te Anamutu, was considerably destroyed by fire discovered in the bar this morning. It was subdued' by great' exertions. ’■ One thousand pounds in Property Tax was received yesterday and to-day. Mr Blackett, Engineer-in-Chief, and Mr Hall, who succeeded Mr Stewal’t as District Engineer, are now preparing for the continuation of the Thames Valley Railway, as far as Morrin’s Ville, within 14 miles of the Thames River at Te Ana, and Mr Hall will afterwards survey the Cambridge lines. Several boys, of the Naval Training School, stole a punt and are now missmg. The police are searching for the lads.The Harbor Board have ordered an account tor damage to the wheat by the Tararua to be sent to the Union Steamship Company. new Zealand rifle association MEETING. Nelson, March 7. Match 16, was completed, Wanganui Rifles taking first prize, with 440 points ; Waimea Rifle* second, with 435 points j and Nelson City Rifles third, with 43,2 points. Scores of winning team are—Foster, 92 ; Armstrong, 90 : Hughes, 88 ; Remington and Nutsford, each 85. Match 17, carbine companies match, was competed this morning, the first team of Wellington Navals securing first, prize with a total of 457 ; Thames Navals and Alexandra Cavalry made a tie for second place, when the Cavalry won by two points. Match 14—Rifle companies trophy, won by H. Hoskins, Taranaki Rifles’ with 69 ; Paynter (Stoke), second, with 68; Purnell (Wanganui), third, with 67. The only match now to be fired is match twelve. The prizes will be distributed to* morrow.
