BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, March 2. It is announced that Generals Sir Donald Stewart and Frederick Roberts are to be created Baronets. The House of Lords has read the Irish Coercion Bill a second time. In the House of Commons last night, the Irish Arms Bill was read a first time, and the measure was voted “ urgent,” in order to give special power to suppress the obstruction to its passing through the House. With a similar object, the consideration of supply was also declared “ urgent.” ♦ LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, March 3. It is considered to be improbable that the division on the Reform Bill to-night in the Assembly will be a party one. After the second reading, Mr Murray Smith will move to refer the Bill to a Joint Committee of the Council and Assembly, hut it is not known what action the Government will take in the matter.
A discussion took place in the Assembly last night on the question of prosecuting the Argus for its criticism re action of the Government, but the matter was allowed to drop without any decision being come to. The second day’s races of the Victorian Racing Club’s Autumn Meeting took place to-day at Flemington. For the Australian Cap, seven started. W. Pile’s First Water won in a canter, by four lengths ‘ Sweetmeat was second • and Progress third ; Grand Flaneur was scratched. Time, 4mins. 11 |-secs j very fast.
Sydney, March 3. Iu the Legislative Assembly last night, Mr Coombes, K.S.M.G. > gave notice of motion in favor of a petition to the Queen, praying for the instituting of an inquiry into the working of the Courts of High Commission in the Western Pacific.
It is stated that there is no foundation for the present rush to the Grey Ranges’ goldfields, on the western border of this colony, as there is a total absence of trustworthy information concerning the prospects of the ground.
