The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1881.

A serious accident occurred to a wellknown miner, Salvadore Garquilo, at Dillman’s this morning. It appears that a blast had just been fired in the claim in which he was working when a large boulder was dislodged from the face, which Garquilo, saw, but although he ran to avoid it the boulder struck him on the left leg, not only breaking but completely smashing the unfortunate man’s limb. He was immediately brought down by his

mates to the Hospital (of which institution he was one of the most indefatigable members of the committee for many years) and from inquiries subsequently made, we learn the full extent of the injuiry cannot at present be determined, A special meeting of the Hospital Committee was held at the Secretary’s rooms last evening; present Messrs Pearn (in the chair), Mansfield, Morgan, Munyard, Agnew, Spyer, and Kiely. The appointment of Dr. Thomas Lee Porter as medical officer of the institution, vice Dr. Acheson resigned, was confirmed, and a sub-committee appointed to draw out a memorandum of agreement between the committee and Dr. Porter. The visiting committee reported that they had visited the institution and inquired into the case of a patient who refused to obey the directions, of the medical attendant and that the patient admitted having on one occasion refused to take the medicine prescribed by Dr. Acheson, on the ground of the nausea is caused, although she in no way intended to shew the least disrespect to the medical officer’s authority or directions. As the patient complained of was in a very prostrate state the visiting committee recommended that Dr. Acheson be requested not to carry out the powers given him by the rules of the institution in regard to refractory patients in this instance. The sum of £ll7s was received from the secretary of the Picnic Committee, being half the amount of the balance left of that fund after all expenses were paid (the other half being given to the Benevolent Society). The meeting then adjourned. We would remind onr readers that the lecture on the “Life and Works of Charles Dickens,” by Mr John ■'Sevan, in aid of the funds of the Kumara Literary Institute, will take place at the Theatre Royal to-morrow evening. Irrespective of the object for which the lecture is delivered, which alone is a deserving one, the fact of any gentleman coming from a neighboring town and voluntarily and kindly delivering a highly intellectual and interesting lecture should-at the least en r title him to a hearty reception at the hands of the residents here, and that reception cannot be in better form than in the shape of a large and appreciative audience to-morrow night. Mr Singer announces that his grand Easter Art-Union will shortly open. ■ - To those in search of merriment visit S. S. Pollock’s, and obtain thergreat Irish song “ The Babies in our Block ”; or “Little Sally Waters”; price sixpence. [A DVT.]
