Wilkinson, Receiver of Land Revenue and Clerk of the Court, Hawera, was charged before Captain Wilsou this morning with having embezzled £l6 13s. Mr Barleyman prosecuted on behalf of the Controller and Auditor-General, and asked for a remand, as other sums would have to be accounted for and witnesses would have to come some distance. Mr Ward appeared for the accused and offered no objection, but asked that bail should be allowed. The Bench had no objection, and remanded the case until Thursday next. Nost people are very sorry to see the accused placed in snch a position. He was very generally respected, and of most obliging disposition. Dunedin, February 19. The 48 hours’ walking match between Scott and Edwards has fallen through. Auckland, February 18. The annual report of the Ladies’ Benevolent Society showed receipts of £SOO. They relieved 135 cases, of which 67 were widows deserted by husbands. A young girl named Annie Bell, who, at the late inquiry at the Industrial home preferred certain charges against the late master, J. H. Jekley,

was seutenced to 3 months’ imprisonment as a coffimon prostitute and vagrant, and had been Magistrate a few days previous, in a case Of assault.
