[new ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Westport, February 15. An inquiry was held to day as to the Charles Ed ward striking the rock. Captain Whit well stated that as the weather was foggy, he stood in to make out the land. After being on this course ten minutes the vessel struck and run over a sunken rock, which proved to be situated two miles south of the Steeples. The watertight compartments alone saved the Vessel from total loss. She was beeched yesterday, and a crack, five feet long and two inches wide, was found in her plates, under the fore-hold and engine room. The compartment has been repaired and the steamer sails for Nelson to-night. Grahamstown February 15. The police state that they have evidence tracing the mouthpiece of the pipe found near the body of the native murdered into possession of the prisoner, Prncoffy. The Ngatinake tribe, of which the native at Te Aroha was a member, is now holding a tangi over the body, and are very excited. The miners are coming in from all the outlying claims, as the natives declare they will have blood for blood. Dunedin, February 15. Judge Williams was entertained by the members of the Dunedin bar tonight, previous to leaving for his trip to England. Invercargill, February 15. After six years’ labor here, Father Higgins, of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, has resigned his charge, and is about to proceed to Europe. A cottage at East Winton, belonging to Robert Thomson, contractor, was destroyed by fire to-day. The bouse and contents were insured for £IOO in the New Zealand Office, Auckland, February 15. Mary Stern, aged four years, was accidentally burnt to death at Pokekohe, while playing with matches. F. H. Shepherd, member of the Auckland Rowing Club, was brought up on a charge of robbery of watches and jewellery at the Club boatshed, while a party of members were absent in a boat. He admitted his guilt when searched. The case was adjourned.
