[new ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Westport, February 15. An inquiry was held to day as to the Charles Ed ward striking the rock. Captain Whit well stated that as the weather was foggy, he stood in to make out the land. After being on this course ten minutes the vessel struck and run over a sunken rock, which proved to be situated two miles south of the Steeples. The watertight compartments alone saved the Vessel from total loss. She was beeched yesterday, and a crack, five feet long and two inches wide, was found in her plates, under the fore-hold and engine room. Shepherd, member of the Auckland Rowing Club, was brought up on a charge of robbery of watches and jewellery at the Club boatshed, while a party of members were absent in a boat. He admitted his guilt when searched. The case was adjourned.
