TEMORA GOLDFIELD.
We make the following extract from a letter received by the. last mail by Mr Blake, of this toWn, from Mr John Everett, who, as a miner, was well known on this goldfield, and whose opinions of Temora may he interesting to those who have the least idea of leaving for the new El Dorado Launceston (Tasmania), February 1, 1881.
The time I left you in Melbourne “Ike” and myself went to Temora. We stopped up there about live weeks, but could not get on to anything* The water in the shafts that we were speaking about at that time was not enough to justify going to any expense about • it was only a little drainage from a high reef on one side of the shaft, easily bailed down, and, sinking deeper, it got no stronger. The place is in a very bad state through the want of water ; men cannot prospect, and there is scarcely any water fit to drink ; and the heat and dust is something frightful ; bat that would be forgctton if there was water to wash the dirt with. Since we left there, I see by the papers that there is some talk of a company being floated to fetch water in, but from whore I do not know—l think it will have to come from the Murrumbidgee, that will be, as the crow flies, about 25 miles, and iron pipes or fuming will have to be used the whole distance; it will be a very expensive affair. As regards the value of the Temora goldfield, there will be a lot of claims there that will pay very well ; and there are a great many that are raising large heaps of dirt, that will be left as soon as the water comes in. The most of the miners are looking for nuggets, and the dirt that-they get all goes into the heap, gold or not, so that when these parties wash up, there will be a good many of them leaving; and again, I believe that there will be more leads open in that district, although it might be at a distance. But the country is that dry for miles around that men will not go out to prospect. “ Ike” and I left there and arrived in Melbourne on New Year’s eve.
