ARRIVAL OF THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL.

AT AUCKLAND. [NEW ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Auckland, February 9. The mail steamer from San Francisco arrived to-day. Among the passengers for Sydney are Count Thun and Sir Arthur Stephen. GENERAL SUMMARY. IjSan Francisco January 18. Copious rains have fallen in California and Oregon. The promise of crops of all kinds, particularly wheat, are more than good. The Mormons are uneasy at the attitude of the President, and have organised a lobby, at Washington, to guard their intei’ests. George G. Cannon, delegate to Congress, was refused his certificate of election by the Governor of the Territory, on the ground that Cannon was a polygamist. Mark Twain, the famous humorist, is going crazy. The population of the United States is unofficially given at 9,152,559. The Transvaal insurgents offer to submit to the British Consul; and to indemnify Great Britain for the war expenditure. The House of Commons has agreed to

appropriate £1,900,000 for carryingforeign mails on ocean routes for the coming year. The Australian line is included in the subsidy.

Sara Bernhardt is meeting with great success in the Western States.

The British ship Topa was wrecked on Filamook Rock, Washington Territory. All hands perished. Heavy avalanches of snow have fallen in the town of Alta, Utah, destroying the place and killing twenty persons. A stage, running between Fort Cummings to Messiia, New Mexico, was attacked by Indians, and the driver and three passengers murdered.

The Orangem'en are particularly active, and have made arrangements to take" care of persons suffering from Boycottism. Mexico has given the. proposed ship railway across the Isthmus of Tehantipac, the right of way and 1,000,000 acres of land.

Indians raiding the State of Chihuatua on December 23rd, killed eleven persons. The Post Office Department is ready to establish telephone services throughout England, and has ordered 20,000 for use. Weston broke down on December 28th, having covered 2,233 miles out of his proposed feat of 2, 500 miles in 1000 hours. At the beginning he walked a mile and a quarter every half-hour.
