The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1881.

When public speakers deal with figures they should always be careful to be thoroughly conversant with their subject, as a matter of some £20,000 is an error not easily overlooked, and at the same time is very liable to lead people to arrive at the most erroneous conclusions. We refer to a statement made at Dillman’s Town last evening from the platform in which the speaker with an unmistakeable tone of authority gave the cost of constructing the branch race to Kumara and the expenses consequent thereon at less than the third of the actual amount. The Hospital Committee will meet this evening to appoint a medical officer for that institution, vice Hr. Acheson resigned. It was to be hoped there will be a full attendance on the occasion as it is a matter in which every member of the committee should have a voice and vote. Notice is given under the hand of the Town Clerk that five persons, formerly residents of this town, have ceased to hold their appointment as fire inspectors of this borough. The agent of the Australian Mutual Society, Mr Kenneth Campbell, took advantage of the large number of persons present at Dillman’s Town last evening, on the termination of the public meeting, ±0 briefly and humorously address those •present, and point out the advantages of the society. Although no one suffered, except from the heat at the time, we learned subsequently that Mr Campbell succeeded in taking several lives.

We understand that a tender has been accepted for the formation of the track between Dillman’s Town and Larrikin’s into a dray road, and that a score or so of men will be immediately employed on the work, so as to complete it expeditiously. We are requested by Mrs Bird to contradict a statement made by one of the witnesses in the case of Police y. Brown, tried at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, that she was present with others in Bremond’s when the prosecutor “shouted.” This she emphatically denies. Our report of the witnesses sworn testimony was as given, to a word.

Mr Gilbert Stewart’s consultation on the Sydney Gold Cup is now open, tickets being obtainable at the principal hotels throughout the Coast. From the very satisfactory manner in which Mr Stewart has conducted all his consultations, there is little doubt he will be as successful with this one as with those previously.
