LITERARY INSTITUTE.

A meeting of the Committee of the Literary Institute was held in the rooms of the society on the evening of the 12th inst., when the following members were present:—The Rev. E. A. Scott, vice-president (in the chair), Messrs Smart, Dillon, Duckworth, Dennett, Petrie, Harre, and O'fiagan. The' newly-elected President, H. A. Strafc. ford, Esq., was prevented from being present, as he had to leave town before the time of the meeting.

After the different accounts and cor* respondence had been gone through, the question of the financial position of the society was considered. A discus-' sion followed as to the advisability of throwing open the Reading Room to the publio, when the different members, of committee expressed themselves as earnestly desiring to do so as soon as the finances of the society were in such a flourishing condition as to admit of it; '■ It was resolved that Mr Bevau be written to asking him to give one ! b£ his popular lectures in aid of the funds of the Institute in about a month's: time.

The quarterly subscriptions being now due, a canvassing committee consisting of Messrs Janion, Petrie, Smart, and Dennett was appointed to collect in the town and neighbourhood.
