BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London 1 , January 13. A deputation from the Peace Society waited upon the Secretary of State for the Colonies to-day, to urge upon steps being taken to bring about the cessation of the war in the Transvaal. Earl Kimberley, in reply to the speaker, said that if the Boers suspended hostilities there might be hopes of an amicable settlement, but otherwise the Government were compelled to continue to use every endeavor to quell the rebellion, and maintain British supremacy in the Colony. -His Lordship further recalled to the deputation the fact that the Boers possessed but a very doubtful title to a large 'portion of the Transvaal, and had therefere no sound claim for independence.
A number of Irish Liberal members of the House of Commons, having made representations to Mr Gladstone regarding a Bill dealing with Irish Land Question, which is to be intronuced by the Government, Mr Gladstone has replied that he could not give any pledges as the pxtent to which the measure would go, but would give an assurance that Government were anxious to do justice to both land-lord and tenant. Information has been received from Central Asia regarding the Russian campaign against the Tekke Turkoman tribes. A Russian force had invested Geok Tepe, when a severe engagement took place. The fighting was : desperate, and both sides suffered heavily. The Russian loss is said to have been most severe.
The trial of the Leaguars at Dublin continues. MrMacdonough has opened the case for the defence of the accused. In the couise of his address, he made a .sratenrt>n£;that.he regarded the accursations wlncfr%ere brought against the Leaguers, as being, in .-.reality landlord indictments against tenants. ■'■■'■■ January 14. Shaw and fifteen other Irish members of the House of Commons have seceded from leadeiship. An extensive strike of coal miners has commenced in Lancashire. Forty thousand miners are out of wort. The detached squadron ordered to the Cape will, ou arrival at Natal, land the Naval Brigade for service against the Boers. Information has been, received from South America that the Chilians are following np their success over the Peruvians and have occupied Harien. ♦ LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, January 15. The wreck of the ship Hereford was sold by auction to-day for £7,000. The Challenge Yachting R:-ce in the Intercolonial Regatta was sailed to-day. There were six entries. Victorian yacht, Janet, was first $ Sydney yacht, Secret, second ; and Auckland yacht, Taniwha, third. There was a fine finish. The details of the race will follow.
SydnEy, January 14. Tlennessy's brandy (bulk quarters) lis; New Zealand wheat, 4s 4d ; New Zealand oats, 2s GJ$ maize, 2s Sd. Telegrams from Blackall have been published, stating that Mr Skuthorpe's statements regarding his possession of the relics of Leichardt must be accepted with reserve.
