BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, January 12. The trial of Land Leaguers at Dublin is still proceeding. The case for the prosecution has closed, and the addresses of counsels for the defence are now being heard. The debate on the Address-in-Reply Was resumed in the House of Commons to-day, atid lasted during the greater part of the sittings. Lord Hartington made an exhaustive speech, in the course of which he severely attacked the Irish Land League and its mode of procedure. Alluding to the Land Bill, which had been introduced by the Government, he expressed his opinion that its provisions were founded on the lines of justice to both tenant and landlord. The debate stands further adjourned. The reinforcements of cavalry and infantry, ordered from service against the Boers, have sailed for Natal. The detached squadron is ordered to the Cape. It is understood that this movement is due to the Boers rebellion in the Transvaal. It has transpired that a general agteoment exists among the Powers, that their Ambassadors at Athens should be instructed to endeavour to persuade the Greek Government to agree to arbitration to the settlement of the frontier difficulty with Turkey. Information has been received that the report receive! yesterday that a plot had been discovered amongst the Natives of Kolapore, to assassinate the European residents, is entirely without foundation. Capetown, January 11. News has been received that further hostilities have occurred between the Cape forces and the rebel Basutos. The latter, in considerable numbers, have made an attack of Colonel Carrington’s position, at Mafeting, but was repulsed after heavy fighting. The enemy suffered considerable loss. January 12. Communications, although of an intermittent character, lias again been established between Natal and Transvaal, and information has been received regarding the position of British troops at Potschefstrom.' The Boers have laid seige to the place, but the garrison can hold out for a month, having sufficient supplies for that period, and it is to be hoped that by that time reinforcements can be sent for the relief of the beseiged. Athens, January 11. The Greek Government has had under reconsideration the proposals that thev should arbitrate for the settlement of thef rentier dispute with Turkey. It is now rumored that the Government has informed the Powers that it must decline the proposal unless the basis of guarantee to* be made to Greece be first stated. LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
