The Great Powers still continue to urge Turkey and Greece to agree to European arbitration on the frontier question, but a favorable result is not expected to be arrived at. January 4. Owing to the rumors of an intended Fenian raid on the armouries of the Volunteer corps of England, the authorities at the War Office have ordered precautions to be taken at the head quarters of the various corps, witb a view to prevent the success of any attack on the armouries. It is a general rumor here to day that a torpedo has been found to have been placed under the bow of Her Majesty’s ship Lord Warden, which is lying in the Firth of Forth, on the East Coast of Scotland. The alleged act is attributed to Fenians. No official confirmation of rumor has been obtained. Capetown, January 4. News has been received from Basutoland that a patrolling force of Cape Rifles, under Colonel Carrington, has safely returned to the camp at Mafeting, after having come up with a convoy of provisions and arms and ammunition, which Had been despatched from head quarters for the use of the garrison. The arrival of the convoy has materially strengthened Colonel Carrington’s position. Further news to hand show fhat the recent defeats of the Basutos, Pondoraise, and Tambookiea, by the Colonial troops have had a good effect on other tribes. The Tirabus, who had also joined in the rebellion are now yielding, a large number of the tribes having recently submitted to the Cape forces, which are operating against them. + LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, January 5. It is announced that the Peninsular and Oriental Company’s steamers, with Homeward mails, will henceforth leave Melbourne for Galle on Wednesday. Adelaide, January 5. The South Australian Parliament was opened yesterday by his Excellency the Governor, whose speech on the occasion referred exclusively to the Border Duties Conventions, which have recently been concluded with Victoria and New South Wales. .
