Blenheim, January 3. The New Year was ushered in by terrible fatality. At about 12.3 on Saturday morning, a house occupied by a bricklayer named Dakie caught fire and was soon burnt to the ground. When the fire was discovered Dakie was roused and escaped in a blanket. The charred remains of Mrs Dakie, who failed to effect an escape, were found under the kitchen floor. An inquest will be held. Napier, December 31.
A man named Long has been arrested on a charge of threatening language. He will probably be charged with setting the Albion Hotel on fire last Monday. It appears that he went into the hotel on the previous day, when the proprietor refused to serve him as he was drunk. He then exclaimed it was the last time a man would be refused a drink in that house, as he would stop it effectually. He was seen about the house by the" police shortly before the fire broke out. Two
nights'afterwards he was refused drink in another house, when he said he would bum it as he had done the Albion.
