RIFLE PRIZE FIRING AT HOKITIKA.
On Friday evening, shortly before 8 o’clock, a number of the local Rifle Contingent, in company with their comrades in arms from Grey mouth left by special coadi for Hokitika to take part in the rifle matches to be fired there on New Year’s Day. The morning of the following day was very favorable to good shooting, and the first match Commenced punctually at G a.m. Captain Bonar was in charge throughout the whole day-, and acted as register-keeper for every squad. The firing on the whole was excessively good, although several well-known shots failed to secure a place. Yol. Coutts of the local Rifle Contingent won the big handicap-, with a splendid score 79 points, of which he only received 4 as a handicap. The Greymouth men were well to the fore, and sure eded in taking the Champion Volunteer Cup which was won by Yol. Heaphy, who also took the Mayor’s prize of £5 os for the highest aggregate score in the two matches. As it Was past seven o’clock' before the Competitors came to the GOO yards, those who considered they had no possible Chance in the contest retired at, the 500 vards, so as to allow the men well up the advantage of the gradually failing light to complete the competition.
