The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. TUESDAY, JUNE 29, 1880.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Hospital Gommittee will be hold this evening, when the tenders for the supply of provisions for the local Hospital will be opened and dealt with. One of the speakers at the public meeting held last evening relative to the Hokitika Harbor works referred to, what he then believed, the fact that we had not drawn attention to the matter in question. Had the gentleman alluded to noticed the first local in onr last evening's issue, we feel assured he would never have publicly made such an assertion. The Arahura Road Board notify by advertisement in another column £hat it is their intention to strike a rate of one shilling in the £ for a period of twelve months commencing on the first of April last. The rate will be payable on the 14th of July next, the rate book meanwhile being open for inspection at the R,oad Board Office, Stafford Town from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A large number of persons, including his Worship the Mayor of Hokitika, were present at a farewell supper last evening, most liberally given by Mr Gilbert Stewart, in honor of one of his old boarders, Mr Davidson, who is about leaving the colony. During the evening an address and testimonial were presented to Mr Davidson, and suitably acknowledged by the recipient. The near approach of the gardening season is again heralded by both Messrs Skilton and Paterson Brothers, who both announce that they have received a choice consignment of seeds suitable for planting during the spring of the year. The following story shows how the most tragic scene can be rendered ridiculous through an unfortunate contretemps : An actor, who shall be nameless, was making a tour in America, and one night, playing Othello—in which character he was considered a great star, although not perhaps by a very discerning public—just at the thrilling moment when the unhappy Desdemona is being smothered by her jealous lord, some soulless gamin in the gallery imitated to perfection an audible osculation, which feat sent the,.ijmdi§nce into roars of laughter. The 'infuriated tragedian bounded to the foot-lights, shook his fists at the gallery, and thundering forth denunciations upon the wretched disturber, dared him to come down on the stage and engage in combat. The more he foamed, the more, of course, everyone laughed. At last the soulless gamin was removed by the police, and quietness restored. The aggrieved Moor returned to the'bedside (where Desdemona was visibly shaking).
