KUMARA TUNNEL COMPANY RE SUBSIDIES.
[to the editor.] Sir—-Will you allow mo to inform your readers that the letter in your Friday’s paper was not written by any member of the Long Tunnel Tail Rare Company. No doubt “ Patriot ” was actuated by good intentions in writing as lie did, , ■■■ but he could not more thoroughly have , misrepresented the position and feelings of the shareholders in the company. ft is true that, finding that those interested in similer Undertakings were flying for grants from the Government. the company thought they might fea well put in a elaim, not for “ a pal try
£100,” but for pound for pound on their outlay amounting to some thousands ; but it is equally true that they are quite independent of aid from the Government, and that there is no fear of their “ languishing for want of necessary funds or passing into the hands of greedy capitalists.” Neither have they any illwill toward the Government because the necessities of the country have obliged them to refuse this and similar applications. Whilst thanking “ Patriot ” for his good intentions, I would mildly suggest that in future it would be as well for him not to take up the cudgels for those who can wield them well enough themselves when they see occasion to do so.—l am, &c., James Wyi.de. Kumara, 19th June, 1880.
