LICENSING COURT.

Thursday, June 17,. [Before Messrs Mackay (Chairman), Arnott, Thomas, and Smith.] Prior to the commencement of the business of the Court a deputation of Revs. E. A. Scott, West, and Hall, gether with some of the leading members of the Good Templars, Waited on the Bench as a deputation, and asked the Bench to carefully consider all the applications that might come before them, and to, grant no fresh licenses. It had been said with some force that the granting of licenses to a great extent did away with the sly-grog trade; but the deputation were firmly of opinion that sufficient licensed houses existed in the district to meet all the requirements of the community. They also urged that as the Local Bill would bo shortly in the circumstances it would to grant no fresh licenses, and thereby let that measure have a chance wh6n it came into operation. Mr Wylde, as Town Cleric, said that his experience in the town on this matter was that in every instance in which a license had not bsen taken out, the houses had degenerated into nothing less than dens of infamy. He felt certain that the Bench would be indicting a great injury on the district generally

by refusing to license these houses, as if the people were willing to place themselves under police supervision, it would be far better for all concerned. KEW APPLICATIONS. Susan Cooney: application for license -Jfor Butler’s Hotel, Seddon street.
