LOSS OF THE CALYPSO.
The following particular relative to the loss of the Calypso have appeared in the D.unedin papers : By the mail Messrs Murray, Roberts and Co. have received advices that part of the cargo of the Calypso is settled as a total loss. The consignees will probably take 75 per c;mt from the Insurance companies, and wait for thn realization of cargo before obtaining a final settlement. The following is an extract from a letter received by Messts Daglcty, Nichol* and Co., under date London. April 22 :•—" The Calypso arrived all well, after a good passage, at the mouth of the Thames on April 13, but anchored in the Prince's Channel, and early on April 14 was* run into ami sunk by an inward bemud steamf-r. All hands and passengers were saved : some of the cargo has been i e-iovemi by divers, but it is doubtful if th- f'lii) ct.n be .saved. Another correspondent wvitus.thnf, it w>:=! a fiae clear night, and both the
ship and her lights were plainly seen, so that it is difficult to account for such prodigious stupidity and recklessness on the part of those in charge of the inward bound steamer. The Calypso lies sunk in 50ft of water, and divers are at present lit work saving what they can get of the cargo, but as yet they have made very little progress. Attempts maj' be made to raise the ship, but their success, if made is very doubtful. 11l conclusion, the writer says that it is a consoling reflection that neither Captain Ilird or anybody on hoard the ship can be in any way blamed. All hands were saved, though both the crew and passengers lost their effects. The vessel which ran into the Calypso is a small steamer called the Hawk, valued at £SOOO. A later telegram says information was received a short time ago that the cargo from tin's vessel had, to a considerable extent, been saved, though, of course, in a damaged condition, and that the net loss would not exceed 50 per cent to the underwriters.
