THE CHESS TOURNAMEANT.

There has been considerable activity displayed during the week by the com- 5 petitors who are contesting at their respective odds for the honor of taking the prizes in the chess tournament, if we except Mr Bisdie, the representative of the big class, who has a long distance to walk to meet hie opponents. Of 1 the twelve games each man had to play, : we find Mr M'Kenzio (Class ’6]' has completed his ' task, with tile’ excellent score of 8| won. Messrs Wiesner (Class 2) and Bennett (Classi6); have each lost the same number as M*Kenzie (3|), and by winning the rest of their games (3 each to play) they could either or both tie M'Kenzie for first prize, Bisdie is the only other representative who can possibly tie or beat M'Kenzie’s score, but as he commenced the handicap, con test by losing 2 .games, his chance is regarded as a rather hopeless one for even a plafce. Barnett, who distinguished himself so much in his class by not losing a single game* and who was therefore looked upon as an easy winner of first prize, has Wig- ' nally failed in the perplexing-giving and receiving of odds-, as we find that ' out of 8 games he has played : 5: are ; recorded against him. The following is the score up’to the present tittle ’ Won. • Lost*'

By adding tlia won and; lost together, it can easily be seen hoW-tnapj games as against 12 each competitor has'Vet to play* id)
