The benefit to be tendered to Mr George King by his numerous friends will take place at the Adelphi Theatre this evening, prior to which the whole of the Friendly Societies, who will be present on that occasion, will meet at the Town Hall and from thence walk in. procession through the principal streets of the town. A meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening, but, owing to the lengthy nature of two reports of public interest brought forward and adopted, we are compelled to withhold a report of the proceedings until our nest issue. From the unusual number of wellknown bonifaces congregated together yesterday afternoon at a certain corner of this town, it was very generally surmised that an event of more than ordinary importance had disturbed the equilibrium of our licensed • victuallers. Taking cognisance of their proceedings and deducting an inference therefrom, as we were debarred from obtaining information in a legitimate' manner, the opinion could only be arrived at that the lie w beer duty was mainly instrumental in bringing about the assemblage, as we observed that sundry potions of malt liquor disappeared from view as promptly as if air excise officer was in close proximity waiting to levy the objectionable duty on the decoction in question. A meeting of the Committee of the Kumara Literary Institute was held at the Heading. Room last evening ; present, the Rev: S. A. Scott (in the chair), and Messrs Janion, Duckworth, Smart, Moss, and Petrie. After the minutes of the preceding meeting had boon read and confirmed, it was resolved, in case certain Home papei’s had been stopped, to have them renewed from date of stoppage. Dr. Acheson, and Messrs Harre and Bennett were elected members of Committee. Mr Moss offered to provide a donation box for the use of the Institute, which oiler was accepted with thanks. The Rev. E. A. Scott and Messrs Smart and Petrie were appointed a deputation to wait on the Borough Council for the purpose of soliciting a grant for the Institute. After passing several accounts, the meeting adjourned. In the Westland County Council yesterday the following motion relative to the Arahura- Road Board was moved by Mr Hirtcr, seconded by Mr Jack, and carried (the West Const Times says) after a long mid angry discussion :—“ That this Conn- ,
cil being desirous of finally dealing with and settling the question of the mergmfjL of the Arahura Road Board, expresses itsS willingness to Contribute a maximum** amount of £SOO towards the liquidation of the debts of the said Board ; such sum of £SOO to be handed over as soon as arrangements to be made by a committee consisting of Messrs Grimraond, Jack, the Chairman, and the mover, are completed ; and that, to facilitate the carrying out of thiia resolution, the said committee bo empowered to act on behalf of the Council in making all the necessary arrangements for the due merging of the Board on payment of the said sum of £500..”
