The Westland County Council this afternoon voted'the sum of £SOO towards assisting the Arahura Road Board to meet all its liabilities, as proposed by fTie deputation of the Board who waited on the Council a short time ago.
We understand that the miner Brigalia, who on Sunday last Attempted td commit i suicidd'At Callaghan's, died in th'a Hokitika Hoiqfttal last evening. The entertainment to be given at the Adelphi Theatre to-morrow evening for the benefit of Mr George King is one that We feel Assisted will,' When th 4 cause is thoroughly receive the hearty patronage of the public generally. At the present' time Mr King, who was formerly the energetic captain of the Volunteer Fire Brigade of this town, is in Melbourne, suffering from almost total blindness, which, although he has undergone several operations and been under the best medical treatment; there is' little probability of his eyesight being ever again restored. The constant drain on his resources through this .distressing affliction has left hitfi-in a pecuniary sense almost destitute; and with a view of placing him in an institution where he will be attended to for the remainder of his life; his many friends organised the benefit which is to take place to-morrow evening on his behalf for that purpose. ' By notices that Appear elsewhere it will , be seen that the various Friendly Societies are requested td meet to-morrow evening, 'to attend the entertainment at the Adel-, phi Theatre on behalf of Mr George King, late of Kumara, and whose affliction s referred to elsewhere. We understand.- • that prior to the opening of the entertainment the various societies will march in procession through ihe town with-torches, headed by the Dillman’s Town, brass band, ; who have also most generously volunteered ■ their services on the occasion. From a telegram that appears in. another column from our special correspondent in Wellington our Stafford Town neighbours will be glad to learn that the : Government have resolved to purchase a .building for a new Court 'House there r-in-stead df (as was currently rumored) hold-' mg ’th'e'Magistrate's Cdlfrt for -the two places at Goldsborough.. Two little children (says' the Wagga Advertiser) were lost at Hcholaj; a. wild comparatively unknown parish in the eleetorate of Moira, about the middle of last week. . <The children were orphans in charge of a bullock-driver, who camped in the vicinity. He was suffering acutely from rheumatism, and sent the little ones to round up the bullocks. After going a certain distance they tried to .return home, but' lost their way. Meeting anaboriginal, they asked him if he had seen to the bullocks. The black directed them the htuftay frontages, and-into the almost, inacessible, redguitt forest.. .. They ..went, there a-nd were sdoh lost. After being lost for two d^ys' and two ■ nights the children were‘found in a hollow tree, being - observed froni thd New South Wales side of the Murray by two boys, who rode over in a dug-out ahd took the children to a place of safety; The young-, est was very much exhausted, but they have not suffered very much from their residence in the forest, although the weather was terrible—raining incessantly and extremely cold. Over 100 horsemen and others were out in search in the forests, which were inundated with water up to the horses’ bellies. The forests are also filled with an undergrowth of brushwood and dogwood of great density, and are swarming With wild pigs.
