The Resident Magistrate remarked this morning that in all the large districts in which he held Courts this one exceeded them all in the number of cases of obscene language that Were brought under his jurisdiction, as the proportion was about 20 here to every 1 he heard in other places. Such a statement, emanating from the Bench, reflects but little credit on this Community as regards the language indulged in by a certain section thereof. A cruel joke was perpetrated (says the Rangitikei Advocate) upon an unsuccessful new chum sportsman the other day. He had been out all day and was returning home crest-fallen, fearing the jeers which surely awaited an empty bag, when he espied a native carrying four large birds, which he explained were new Zealand ducks. These he purchased, and with them came home in triumph. When lie saw his companions' faces he wished those four old shags had never been hatched, rather than he should have been "gulled" with them.
