Tn consequence *>f the insufficient amount of shipping the grain and potatoes arrive so fast in Lyttelton that large quantities have to be stacked in the open air in the railway yard. Buyers have been obliged to delay delivery to allow accumulation to be cleared 03. The man Taylor who fell out of the butcher’s cart the other day died from the effects, as was anticipated. The City Council to-night carried a resolution — <! That this Council do relinquish all sanitary matters and works in connection therewith to the Local Board of Health on and after June 30th, 1880.'’ The effect of this decision is to render it neces-ary for the Board of Health to arrange for carrying on the pan system, sweeping channels, and general scaveiigering work. The Council, by a recent decision in the Resident Magistrate’s Court, has no power to enforce sanitary provisions, and the. Board of Health declines to give up a part of its powers. Dunedin, May 31. James Fulton, M.H.R., for Taieri, addressed his constituents at Outram to-night. He said he was in favor of a reduction of expenditure, but could not see how the country could do without a property tax. It was inquisitorial, but not so much as an income tax. He disapproved of the Laud Tax. The Electoral Bill would cause great discussion, but would not affect the Taieri district. He considered the present franchise a great boon to working classes. A comprehensive measure was required to deal with licenses, and he would support a Permissive Bill. He would support the Subsidies to Counties Bill, as better provision could be made such as an extended range of powers. Election petitions should be decided hy the Supreme Court Judge, and not hy Committees of the House. He would support the re-imposition of school fees. A vote of thanks and confidence was carried.
