BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, May 29. At the wool sale to-d ay 8900 bales were offered, making a total of 318,100 catalogued since the opening. The tone of the sale was firm. The Orient Company’s steamship Garonne sailed from Plymouth to-day for Australia. The match between the Australian cricketers and 18 of Rochdale was concluded to-day. The Australians won the match in one innings with 16 runs to spare, and thus recorded their fourth victory. The following appointments have been made in the Order of St. Michael and St. George : —Major George Cumins Strachan, Governor of Tasmania) to be Knight-Commander; and Charles Dommett, of New Zealand, and Mr Thurston, Colonial Secretary of Fiji, to be Companions of the Order. It is announced that a European Conference will be held at Berlin next month. At present the questions to be discussed will be limited to those about the Greek frontier, but whether the Conference will extend its deliberations to other questions is at present uncertain. Constantinople, May 29. The Right Hon. G. O. Goschen has arrived to assume the position of special ambassador of Great Britain to the Porte.
