[By Telegraph.] [Per s.s. Rotontahana, via Russell.] London, May 18. In the second innings of the Australians against Derbyshire, Murdoch made 10 runs, A. Bannerman 10, and Groube 11. May 19. Mr Parnell commands the support of the Home Rule party in the House of Commons. The first act of his leadership was to submit a programme and to caucus the Home Rule'rs, who mously resolved to support his scheme. Correspondence of considerable importance has taken place between the British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Mr Secretary Evarts, ort the subject of the Newfoundland Fisheries. The late English Secretary, the Marquis of Salisbury, deuied that there were any grounds for the demand made for compensation on behalf of the American Fisheries, and gave his views on the subject at considerable length; In his reply, Mr Secretary Evarts entirely repudiated the views of the Eoglish Secretary of State, and further, in a letter to President Hayes, he urges that the United States Government would be justified in adopting* retaliatory measures in defence of the rights of American fishermen. This serious declaration of Secretary Evarta has excited somewhat of a sensational interact in America, and lias"''been
Quoted with considerable surprise in England. The policy of the Liberal Government on the subject is looked forward to with unusual anxiety. The Earl of Beaconsßeld has called a meeting of the Tory party to consider what programme shall be adopted in reference to the conduct of the business of the Opposition. May 20. It is known that the Home Govern ment would approve of the reform of the Victorian constitution based on the proposals mentioned in Mr Service's election speeches; also of a similar scheme to settle the difficulty between the two branches of the Legislature in New South Wales. The Eight Hon. H. C. E. Childeis, Secretary of State for the War Department, will, it is expected, resign his position on the Commission now sitting in reference to the question of Colonial defence. The despatch of the Fine Arts collection for the Melbourne Exhibition is at a standstill, owing to the absence of a definite reply from the Melbourne Commission as to their return. Sir Charles Gavan Duffy has. de : fclined the overtures made to offer himself for a seat in Parliament until he has published his history.
