THE CHESS TOURNAMENT.

The class competition in the chess tournament is rapidly approaching com- , pletion so far as the representatives are concerned, and, with the exception of the third and fourth (though we understand Mr Barnett will most certainly represent the fourth), the names of the winners of the largest number of games in their respective classes are as follow :—Petrie, class 1; Wiesner, class 2; M‘Kenzie, class 5; Bennett, class 6 ; Sutherland, class 7. Those who stand foremost in class 3 are—Bisdy, who has won G|, and lost only (out of 14 games he had to play); Smart, won 7, lost 3; and Pierson, won 7 4, lost 3J-. For the fourth class Mr Barnett stands out with a score of 84 out of a possible 12; he has only three games to plav, tind if he win or draw either of these, or either of the two with whom he has to play retire (which wo are informed is the case), his score cannot then he beaten. The representative and actual handicap competition was commenced on Tuesday night by Messrs Petrie and • MTve.nzie, the former conceding a rook and two moves. Mr Petrie was defeated in the first encounter, but won the secmd game with the same player On the fnllowii g evening. Last bight ■■ Mr Wiesner was defeated twice by Mr *■ -MjKenzioj at the odds of a rook, and •Mr-Sutherland shared the same fate at the-hands of Mr Petrie, at the odds of a queen. With pawn and move Mr Wiesnet defeated Mr Petrie one game.
