[united .press association.] Wellington, May 26. One of the men drowned in the Wairarapa Lake, was Jim the bushman, station band. The body of the other has not yet been recovered.. At' the inquest on John Glilchrisfc, who was accidentally shot on Monday, the jury returned a verdict of accidental death. The Post states that a statement has been made, that the Minister of Public Works has directed the hours of the labor railway hands to be increased from eight to nine hours, On inquiry however, it is found that no such instructions emanated from the Minister, but during the. time of exceptional pressure from the grain goo,ds traffic lately, men were called on by the traffic managers to work an extra hour, this being purely a temporary expedient. The following has been received by the secretary of the Post Office, in connection with the alleged tampering with mails on board the steamer Rotomahana. The string fastening on a mail bag for the Thames, shipped on board the Rotomahana, on the evening of the 24th, was cut by one of the crew in a state of intoxication, but the mail was not otherwise tampered with. The bag was returned to this office, before the steamer left and was refastened, the contents being found correct and undisturbed, It is supposed the culprit has been, apprehended and will be charged with the offence. The press have, unnecessarily, magnified the occurrence. Napier, May 26. A man Was arrested up country on Saturday, on suspicion of being the absconding witness Lyons, who ran away when wanted for the prosecution of M‘Mannan, for arson, at Invercargill. The prisoner denied his indentity, but he had “ Mary Murphy” tattorad on his wtn, and otherwise lie answered the Gazette description. However a telegram from Inspector Fox, 1 Invercargill,, stated he would not prosecute,' so the prisoner was discharged,

Some of the clothing of Mr M'Lonjgall, who has been missing now for ten days, lias been fohnd near the edge of a precipice 100 feet high, in the Fated country. The Government steamier Hiuemoa, left Manakau for Wellington wiih a portion of the Auckland members of the General Assembly, including Mr O’Rorke, Speaker. A number of them were finable to leave by her, and she will, therefore, return at the fend of the week. W. H. Bartlett, arrested fob larceny Of mail bag on board the Rotomahanu, has been remanded.
