MISS MAY HOLT.
" Atticus "in the Leader says : —" I have the highest regard for actors, I always make it a rule to force dramatic matters to the front whenever the chance comes in my way. A paragraph in an English journal is worth noting. There is a certain amount of cool disregard of social requirements in Bohemia which I admire, but surely the fallowing is a little severe. A Miss May Holt, well-known in New Zealand as a daughter of ' Joe ' now < Clarence' Holt, quits the stage for the holy estate of matrimony, she being engaged, according to my newspaper, to 'Mr Jchn Fairburn, son and heir to Sir John Fairburn, a wealthy Yorkshire baronet.' 1 suppose that ' Fairbairn ' is meant, in which case I congratulate Miss May. But the funny part of the the only funny part of the business—is that Papa Holt is going to dramatise the story of his child's affections, and thinks it will make rather a neat play. ' This marriage,' says my newspaper, 'is a romauce of real life, which Mr Clarence Holt is engaged in adapting to the stage. His very vigorous rendering of Victor Hugo's fiction promises success where the story concerns him more nearly. ' O wonderful son that can so astonish a mother!' I may add, ' O wonderful daughter that can so inspire a father!' And yet we wonder why the art of acting is condemned when such creatures play at it."
