Charleston, May 14. Heavy work at Court yesterday. The Magistrate granted a petition declaring the election at the Wariatea riding void as written ballot papers were used and other informalities. Costs against the Returning Officer. The fracas affair ended thus. The manager of the Government race was fined £4, and ordered to keep the peace for six with securities; the road contractor was bound over to keep the peace for six months.
Oamaru, May 16. The water works are expected to be completed in three months, and the Borough engineer has, in consequence, tendered his resignation. At the meeting of the County Goun* cil to-day it was decided that no. rates should be levied dining the current year.
May 17. Mr John Reid has announced himself a candidate.
A fatal acaident occurred on Sunday afternnon, by which a lad 16 years of age, named Charles Haggit, lost his life. He and a companion were out shooting and when in the act of putting on an overcoat one of the guns exploded, and the charge entered Haggit's side, killing him almost immediately. At the inquest to-day, a verdict of accidental death was returned.
Timaru, May 15. Large numbers of laboring men are lerving here for Cape Town, r owing to the.gloomy prospects for the winter. Dunedin, May 16. There is a row iu the Liberal ranks. Sometime ago Mr Roberts issued his address in the local papers, and now several of the electors wish him to retire from the cpntest in favor of Mr Jones. This Mr Roberts will not, do, urging as his reason that Mr Jones,was one of his supporters on coming forward, and that it would be undignified on his part to retire. It is, impossible to tell what the upshot will be, but it is likely that Mr Jones will contest the seat against Mr Roberts.
May 17. It is understood that the result of the auditor's investigations into the accounts of the Permanent Building. Society, has resulted in defalcation to a considerable amount being discoVefed, Mr Webb was guaranteed by the Standard Insurance to the extent of ,£2OO. Wellington, May 17. Legal proceedings, arising out of the facts elicited at the inquiry recently held in reference to the late accident to the p.s. Manawatu, are about to be taken against the captain for going to sea without the proper complement of met), against the purser for falsification of the ship's articles, and against Mr Martin, agent, for fraudulently engaging men to go to sea. Summonses will be issued forthwith, and their hearing will probably take place this week.' Nothing has been heard of the cutter Hero, which left Lyttelton about a fortnight since. She was loaded with grain, and was the property of Captain Thompson, the master, and Mr Bishop, of this city, and valued at £SOO. The latter's share is insured for £l5O in the South British. It is understood the cargo was insured for £350. AtfCKLAittJ, April 17. The petition for the release of Mrs Bostock, imprisoned for evasion of Customs duties, has been signed by 600 citizens, including, the Mayor. Mr Barstow, R.M., forwards it to the Minister of Justice.
