Owing to there being no quorum of members present the meeting of the Borough Council did not take place last evening.
Mr R. J. Seddon, one of the members for this district, will address his constituents at the Adelphi Theatre, at 8 o'clock to-morrow evening.
At the last meeting of the County Council Mr Seddon moved an amendment to a motion of Mr Dale's to the effect that the gold duty should be gradually reduced, and then abolished, which motion was carried, owing to the good sense of the majority of the councillors present. On this subject, however, the West Coast Times appears far from pleased, as it observes : " Ultimately Mr Seddon carried his point and, strange to say, took nearly the whole of the Council with him, all the councillors at least voting with him, except two." Evidently our contemporary is of opinion that anything benefiting the mining community, especially if brought forward by Mr Seddon, should be vetoed immediately by the Council. We learn that a pugilistic encounter between two well-known knights of the yard-stick occurred at an an early hour yesterday morning, but as we were neither informed of the locality of the intended combat nor favored with the usual press privileges, we are enable to give the full particulars or result of this desperate softgoods batle, which it is currently rumored originated through or was connected with the great emperor Napoleon.
Tenders are invited for the second section of the Kumara sludge-channel. Plans and specifications may be seen at the Public Works office here.
Fresh tenders are invited by the Secretary of the Local School Committee for draining leveling, and sowing with grass, a part of the State School grounds. Tenders will close to-morrow at 6 p.m.
