Christchurch, May 10. The adjourned cases wherein various persons were charged with obstructing the night-soil contractor were disposed ot to-day at the Resident Magistrate’s Court. Contrary to expectation, the charges presented quite an amusing aspect. The' Resident Magistrate has decided that .the fact of an entrance gate being locked at night is decidedly not an obstruction, and further that the fact of finding nothing to remove, implied removal by some person other than.the contractor, who cannot be regarded as an obstruction. As to whether persons were justified' in using excrbta in their gardens, his Worship declined to express.an Opinion.

Macassey, of Dunedin, and the loss the bench, bar, and public had sustained through his death. Mr Stout spoke in similar terras, and felt sure that Mr Macassey’s family in their bereavement would have the sympathy of the whole of the profession.

By the Meg Merrilies, from Levuka, intelligence has bedn received of the murder of an American named John* ston, of the firm of Johnston and Chaffin, by the Natives of the Island of Aoha.
May 11. The funeral of Hetheringtoo the marine of H.M.S. Gorinoraut took place this day. The crew of the German warship Nautilus, paid last honors to the unfortunate deceased.
