London, May „4. The, Daily . referring to the increase of Russian poyjer in theßacific and the. possible consequent danger to the Australian Colonies* s&ggests that a strong British squadron should be Stationed there, the colonies paying a portion of the cost.
Great excitement exists in. Hamburg owing to the Government, asking to include that part of the city in the ZoU* verein.
The Pall Mall Gazette is under the impression that the late wars have eradicated the opinion that England is careless of the connection of her colonies, and that now all are unanimous in appreciating the fact that during the recent depression. the colonial trade compensated England for losses incurred elsewhere. The question of Imperial and Colonial Defence , should- now be settled and would be a triumph to the Liberals to accomplish this. The Gazette believes that the recent application to the Home Government for advice in colonial affairs is a removal of the old jealousy of the Colonial .Office, and thinks Umfc now is a, favorable time when discussing treaties with foreign; powers to impress upon ... the colonies favoring protection, the advantage of understanding the subject of tariffs.
■ May & A requisition has been presented to Sir Charles Gavan Duffy, lately Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Victoria, to stand for Meath.
The German Government intend to include Bremen and Hulbeck in the Zollverein.

All the Ministers, with the exception of Sir William Vernon Harcourt, Home Secretary, who are members of the House of Commons, have now been re* elected to their respective seats. • CooKtowN, May. 10. The Eastern mail steamer Somerset has arrived from .Singapore with the Tories Straits mail, and brings the following items of Eastern news :~War between Russia and China is becoming increasingly imminent. The latter is in a disturbed condition, and trade is much, prejudiced thereby. At the northern ports the Chinese Government are making warlike preparations, and pushing forward - their armaments,' whilst Russia is placing an army on the Kuldja frontier.
