A. greets andal has occurred at New York. The Shepherd’s Fold, a home for destitute children, which was under the management of the Rev Edward Cowley, has been looked into, and 22 children have been rescued from than den of neglect and ill usage, and allowed to show theii pale and haggard faces in a court room. The recital of the outrageous treatment of these waifs confined to the tender mercies of charity is enough to make the blood turn cold. They have been starved, overworked, and slowly poisoned. They have been compelled to do all the cooking and household work themselves, and the girls, only one of them has reached her fifteenth year, have strained their backs over the wash-tubs. There have been no servants in the institution ; there has been little food and even that little has been unwholesome ; and the medical attendance has been shocking. These startling facts have b en brought to light by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. The officers of the institution promise to repel the accusations. The first thing for them to do will lie to produce in Court a child under their care who is not covered with sores and gaunt from starvation. The Rev Edward Cowley has to take his trial on a charge of murder by starving a number of the children.
In answer to a circular recently issued by the North Canterbury Board of Education, calling for Committees to state for what purposes other than school work the respective schoolrooms "were used some very amusing returns have been sent in. In addition to a whole category of local entertainments and dances rendered in one return, the Committee for the district heralds the fact that the last object for which the mom was used was “ the exhibition of a learned pig.” Can this be considered connected with the cause o£ education?
