Dunedin, April 30. A fire occurred at Flag Swamp on the 28tli instant, and destroyed seven stacks of wheat and one of oats, belonging to Mr Alexander Annan. The stacks were insured in the Standard Office for £3OO.

The expenditure in connection with the Industrial School at Look-out Point for the year ended 31st March was £3lßl , of which £2078 was expended in maintenance, and the balance in salaries. The average number of inmates, including the staff, was 248, and the cost a fraction over 4s lid per head per week.

May 2. A fire on the premises of H. F. Dench) Port Chalmers, on Saturday morning, totally destroyed the building and furniture, the inmates having had a narrow escape. Insurances—£2oo on the furnitures and £2OO on the building, in the Union Office. The loss is estimated at £l5O. The holder of a mortgage on the property had another insurance of £6OO in the New Zealand.

Timaru, April 30. M'Nulty was arrested at Dnnedin, charged with intending to leave the Colony while bound over to appear as a witness in a robbery case at the Supreme Court, Tiinaru. The accused stated he was intending to visit the Old Country to see his father, who is dangerously ill. He was Sent to gaol until he found one security in illoo for his attendance at the Court.

Christchurch, April 30. A fire broke out at 6 o’clock this evening at a gasfltter’s shop in High street. It started in the upper storey, bill the brigade were very smart, and, with the aid of hand engines, put out the flames before they did much damage. The building was a very old one, in the centre of a block of old buildings, and was insured for £2OO in the National. The principal damage Was caused by wreckages and removals from the shop next door.

May 1. Sir George Grey is expected to be in Christchurch the week after next. A telegram has been received from him, saying he will, if well enough, leave for the south during next week. A man named Patrick Maxwell was riding on the railway line, when the engine overtook him and struck his horse, killing it instantly, besides seriously injuring the man. Paint hopes of his recovery are entertained.
