BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, April 22. The Indian Government will contribute £IO,OOO towards the project for }>lacing teas on the Australian market. The resignation of the Ministry has been accepted. Hartington has been summoned by the Queen to form a new administration.

The Marquis of Hartington and Earl Grauville had an audience of Her Majesty the Queen to-day, in regard to the formation of a new Ministry. The reserve, in notes and bullion, in the Bank of England amounts to £16,150,000, being quarter of a million more than last week. At the wool sales to-day, 11,100 bales were offered, making a total of 20,600 bales catalogued since the opening. To-day's sale was firm, and an active demand continued. The market for Australian wheat and tallow is dull. Calcutta, April 23. Intelligence has been received of the resumption of hostilities in Afghanistan. A severe attack was made upon General Stewart's force, on the 19 th instant, in the vicinity of Ghuznee by 15,000 Afghans. A serious conflict ensued, and resulted in the defeat of the enemy with heavy loss. The British loss is unknown. General Stewart's vanguard entered Ghuznee on the 20th.

LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. A deputation of working men waited on Service (Premier) to-day, and used threatening language, and demanded remunerative employment. They declared they had to do stone-breaking.

Service replied tbat everything possible Lad been done, and it was impossible for the Government to do more. The ship George Arkle, bound to the Colonies, went ashore near Soarabaya, but she managed to get off without assistance. April 24. Diphtheria has made its appearance at Sandhurst. Thomson Moore, the member for MandUrang, has accepted the position of Government whip in the Assembly. The pfospectus has been issued of a freeiing Company, under the dry air process, with a capital of £IOO,OOO. The sum of £40,000 has already been subscribed, and the company will commence operations as soon as the subscriptions amount to .£50,000* Sydney, A pi'il 23.
