BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, April 18. It is unofficially understood that Beaconsfield on Saturday tendered the resignation o£ himself and colleagues, and that her Majesty accepted it. The Standard publishes a paragraph confirming the statement. The Times to-day, discussing the probable members of the New Ministry, states that John Bright will accept a portfolio. Trustworthy intelligence has been received that a force of Pathans has massacred a party of British, including an officer, near Quettah. It is further stated that the Pathans have blocked the road between Quettah and Candahar. A detachment of British troops has been despatched from Candahar to Quettah against the rebels. + LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, April 20. Much speculation continues regarding the appointment to the Speakership of the Legislative Assembly. Nothing certain is yet known on the subject. Diphtheria continues in a severe form at Hamilton, and the same disease is spreading in the township of Aveuel. Sydney, April 20. A delegate holding a thousand Melbourne proxies has arrived here to oppose the abolition of the proxy voting, which is to be proposed at the Mutual Provident Society's meeting to morrow. The International Exhibition, which has been open seven months, waa formally closed to-day by the Governor, Lord Augustus Lofcus, in accordance with the programme which was issued, and in the presence of a large crowd. The Executive Commissioners' address to his Excellency, which was read at the closing ceremony, stated that the exhibits had numbered 14,000, to which 7,070 awards had been given, including 2,753 first class, and 2,082 second class. The admission during the seven mouths
had leached 1,070,000; the receipts % had been under £OO.OOO, but it was hoped that tile sum would pay working expenses.

The miners lddges consent to consider the offer, but it is unlikely they will agree to accept it. Brisbane, April 20. It is Understood that Governmeni have received an offer from an English Company to land the cable from Ceyloii to Point Parker, in the Gulf of Carpentaria.
