Eafl Grey, in a letter, expresses his distrust of the Liberals and of Mr Gladstone’s leadership. Mr Gladstone has replied, vindicating hitfiSelf and reiterating his intention to follow the leadership of Lord Hartingtoh and Earl Granville. The country doubts this. April 1, The Right Hon. W. Goscheu, who was in the last Gladstone adrainistnltion, and Agent-General for the Colony of Victoria, has been re-elected for Pontefract. The O’Donoghue, a prominent Irish member; who has lately given in his adhesion to the Horae Rule party, has been again returned for Tralee. Mr Gladstone despite the fact that he contests Midlothian, baa been returned for Leeds with a majority of over 11,000 votes. One of the greatest triumphs of the Liberals has been at Southwark, lor which Mr Clarke had been returned only a few months ago in the Conservative interest. The liberals carried the two Seats by a large majority, At Chelsea, Sir Charles Dilke, one of the prominent members oil the Radical party, has been returned by a large majority, and the second shat was wrested from the Conservatives. April 2. The health of the Empress of Russia, since her return froth (jaiines, has been of a declining state. The change of climate has failed to afford the least relief. By latest advices, no hopes are entertained of her recovery. April 3. The new Parliament will meet on the 29 th instant; The death is announced of Lord Rivers-, the patron of the Tichborne claimant. Wheat is drooping, owing to the large arrivals from America, and elsewhere. At New York quotations are falling. Wool is Very firm, with a steady inquiry. The sugar market is (Stagnant. Much surprise is expressed by the Continental press at defeat of the Beaconsfield Government. The success of the Liberals Las created a bad impression at Berlin arid Vienna, as it is feared thdt die aeeessioii of Mr Gladstone to power will mean the breaking up of the entente cordiale between England, Austria and Germany in the settlement of affairs in the East. Owing to the rejection of the Kuldja treaty by the Chinese Government, very strained relations exist between Russia and China, the Chinese Govern ment insisting upon the promised retrocession of the Kuldja province without the objectionable conditions sought to be attached by Russia. The returns of the elections are completed, and give the following result Liberals, 275 ; Tories, 140; majority for the Liberals, 133; Much excitement has been occasioned throughout Ireland by the discovery of a diabolical plot to seriously injure, if hot to murder, a Candidate for Parliament, Mr Gray, who was contesting the seat for Carlow. He had arranged to address a meeting at Boms or Burrisedrone. Before the meeting had assembled it was discovered that a quantity of dynamite had been placed under the f&rtfqrm, with the evident intention of blowing the candidate and his supporters in the air. Fortunately the timely discovery frustrated the plot. The utmost indignation prevails at the attempted outrage, which is assigned to the bitterness arising from political animosity.
