SUICIDE OF A GIRL.
. Sarah Hegney, aged 17 years, committed suicide by throwing herself into the river "farra, near Prince’s bridge, Melbourne, under somewhat peculiar circumstances on the evening of the 19th nit. The evidence, given at the inquest disclosed the fact that the deceased had been living away from her home for about five weeks, and that her parents did not know where she was. She appeared to have been employed at the Shamrock Hotel in Swanson street, and to have made the acquaintance of several young men, her relations with whom are not very clearly defined. The following remarkable letter was adduced at the inquest Melbourne, March 19, 1880.—Miss Julia, my dear and loving sister,—l suppose ydu will not believe I am going ' drown myself Oft account as Mrs Nob and Mrs Power, at the Shamrock Hot. Swanson street, was the ruin of me. So give my love lo all sisters and brothers and your own dear self, dear Julia. That is what I wanted you for to come down on. the banks of the Yarra last night, for you and Mary Hogan would see me go in. Dear Julia, it grieves-me greatly not to say good-bye to my mother and father, as I am going to the bottom of the great blue sea. Hoping I will meet you with the keys of . Heaven in my hand, or the keys of the" other place in my hand. But, dear sister, I know right well I will not go .to heaven; but lam the first in the family ever attempted to do such a thing. But never mind, dear Julia, I hope you or.any one else will not curse my soul. Let me rest in the bottom, of the deep blue sea. No expenses for Daley, the undertaker, in Spring street. Oh, dear Sister, 1 am so sorry to leave you and all njy dear sisters and brothers, but I kissed you and Mary Hogan last night, as much ns Id say . good-bye, old sticks, for ever. That is what I wanted to see Tom Carroll fot. You and Mary heard me say I Would not see him in a hurry again. <3ive my best love, as all, to him. I was very sorry I could not see him before I went to my grave. But never mind any “one of my enemies as for to tell them to forgive me. Fred Rankin was one. Excuse this; lamin a hurry. The jury found that the deceased committed suicide during a fit of temporary insanity.
