THE SYDNEY CUP.
• ♦ The sporting correspondent of the Australasian, telegraphed the following particulars of the Sydney Gold Cup : Randwick, March 31. The Autumn Race Meeting was continued at Randwick to-day. There was only a moderate attendance numbering about 8,000. The Governor and Lady A. Loftus were present. The principal event on the programme was the Sydney Cup, for which afield of 26 started. Petrea, who had been made a strong favorite ever since she won the Leger, carried off the Cup honours very easily, winning pretty well as she liked, five lengths in advance of Martindale. SYDNEY COP. Of 500 sovs., with a sweepstake of 20 sovs. each added. Second horse to receive 50 sovs. Two miles. Hon. W. J. Clarke’s b f Petrea, 3 yrs, by King of the Ring— Mischief, 7st lllb. ... ' ... 1 Hon. J. Tail’s br h Stratheam, 5 yrs, 7st 81b. ... ... 3 The following also started :—Sweetmeat, Columbus, The Dean, Falmouth, Woolstone, Nellie, Caspian, Lowlander, Gipsy Cooper, Sunshine, Hopeful, Black Swan, Ravenswood, Firebell, Auckland, Euclid, Sunlight, The Pontiff, Freemason, Middlesex, Caractacus, Croydon, and Secundus.
Betting.—6 to 1 each Martindale and Betrea, 10 to 1 each Sweetmeat, Strathearn, and Hopeful.
It was a bad start. Freemason w; the first to show in front* but Gipsy Cooper soon took the lead, with Valetta and Sunlight next, the rest headed by Kellie, with the Pontiff following, Sweetmeat and The Dean last. Passing the Stand, Freemason led with Gipsy Cooper second, and Sunlight third* At Cutt’s Stand Sunlight took the premier position, leading Freemason by two lengths. The latter was beaten at the back of the course. Sunlight now led by half a length with Caracta* cus second and Petrea going up. Sunlight still led at the sheds, then Caractacusand Petrea, the latter immediately taking second place, Strathearn lying fourth, and Martindale coming up fast. Sunlight led round the turn, followed by Petrea, Martindale, and Strathearn, and in the straight Petrea went to the front, and won easily by five lengths from Martindale, with Strathearn third, half a length away, then Sunlight, Black Swan, and Lowlander.
