WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL.
—♦ The Council met at Hokitika, on Wednesday last, at 2 p.m. Present: the Chairman (Mr Lang), and Messrs Sandle, M'Gcldrick, Hitter, Seddon, Grimmond, Dale, and Jack. From the report of the proceedings which appeared in the West Coast Times we extract the following pertaining to this district;— The Chairman presented a petition from residents of the Aralmra district, respecting the proceedings of the Arahura Road Board. The petition was received. ARAHURA ROAD BOARD. Mr Seddon moved, “ That inasmuch as this Council did by resolution passed on the 11th day of January, positively promised to sign the Deed of Arrangement as between the creditors of the Aralmra Road Board, the said Board and County Council, with a view of carrying out that promise, that Messrs M'Whirter, Jack, and the County Chairman, or any two of them be appointed in accordance with ‘ The Counties Act, 1876/ to sign the Deed as agreed upon. The question of passing resolution confirming resolution to merge the Arahiira Road Board to stand adjourned until the first bills are due in October next.” He contended at some length that he was in a much stronger position to urge this resolution, seeing that -his constituents hadjreelected him after he had resigned to A test this very question. He concluded - a long speech by saying that if the resolution were carried he would be sorry for the Editor of the West Coast Times, who would then have nothing to write about.' The Times pretended to lead public opinion, but everyone knew it did not. He also charged the Chairman with breaking his word. There was no seconder, The Chairman called .upon Mr Seddon to move the second resolution standing in his .name. Mr Sandle then rose to second the first resolution, but the Chairman ruled.*that he was top la|e.
