MINING NEWS.
RBBFION. We take the following items of raining news from the Inangahna Herald, of Thursday:— Battery.—Towards the end of the week the machinery that has recently been undergoing repairs, will again be in readiness. It was found when the stamperboxes were removed that the bed-logs were not so firmly fixed as they should be for reducing of quartz ; all the larger pieces of the machinery are fixed, and should all go well. The Just in-Time wili send down quartz during the early portion of the coming week, Their crushing will run for several weeks, after which the Fiery Gross will come in with a moderate sized parcel of stone. A letter was read from the Welcome Company at the meeting of the Crushing Committee, held on Saturday evening last, wishing to know when that company could have the use of the mill. It may be inferred, therefore, that the Welcome Company have not yet decided to purchase the existing battery or erect a battery of their own. It is more probable that the intention is abandoned, as the bands put on to clear and prepare a site for the battery have been knocked off. The Welcome Company have a quantity of quartz lying in the middle paddock, which it is their wish to treat separately, the stone having been procured during the construction of the intermediate level, so as to arrive at the exact yield of the quartz that will be raised frdn that portion of their mine. Just-in-Time—There is about two hundred and fifty tons of stone to grass, and the quantity being raised daily goes to prove the large width of reef now being followed in many stopes. Fiery Cross.—Connection with the intermediate and lowest levels was established yesterday by holing through to the bottom level. The block of quartz lately opened up is now prepared for being broken down, and I am informed that it will be let by the fathom, it being the intention of the directors to invite applications for doing the wark by contract. The contractors extending the low main tunnel a distance of one hundred and fifty feet, threw up the work last week, as the distance driven did not wrrrant them to proceed, as they did not average anything like the current rate of miners wages. Since then another party have accepted the work at an increase of Is fid per foot, and are reported to be making better progress.
Hopeful.—Stoping was re-started yesterday at this mine, Mr Black being the mine manager. The width of reef left on the boundary of the Welcome and this mine in the stopes over the No. 4 level is from two to three feet; and supposing the yield to be similar to that procured by the Welcome Company from recent crushings, which were of a highly payable character, shareholders may again expect dividends. Welcome.—A distance of some fifty or sixty feet has yet to be driven before the existing contract will be out of hand. This is the only work being carried on in the mine at present. The company are about to sink from the intermediate level a depth seventy feet, and at that depth they will connect with the No. 6 level.
