Dunedin, April 8. The whole of the Studholme cases, in which damages are claimed for compensation arising out the great Waiinate bush Are, have been withdrawn.
The Civil Service Commission to-day took the evidence of Mr A. Grant, General Manager of Railways, and Mr Baiufield, B,ailway Storekeeper. The Otago Harbor Board have been informed that the money paid by them as Land Tax will be refunded by the Government.
The divorce case—Herbert Fergiisson v. Jane Fergusson and J. Prendiville, co-respondent—is set down for hearing on Monday.
Blenheim, April 9. The latest Upper Wairau goldtield news is that a party of three, after washing up four day's stuff, obtained a yield of five ounces. All in the creek are getting gold, the average returns being from 10 to 12 shillings per day, The flood did no damage to the diggings.

The City of Sydney, from San Francisco, arrived at 3.30 p.m. She left San Francisco on March 20th, at 2 p.m., and arrived in Honolulu on 27th, in the fastest time ever made—6 days 16 hours 20 mins. Exchanged signals with the City of New York on April 4, but could not communicate) owing to the bad weather, and arrived as above in 19 days and 55 mins. Passengers J For Auckland—Smith and wife and five children, C. R. Smith, wife and infant, W. R. Robinson and six steerage. For Sydney—(saloon) Dr Hill and wife, Jas. Otis, VV. R. BudeD, Mrs and Miss Webb, Mrs Louis Legg, F. W. Fells, J. Bridger, Mrs Whiting, Mr Vernon , and wife, and 25 steerage. Cargo for New Zea* 1and—13,765 packages merchandize. The mail steamer leaves for Sydney at 12 p.m. .
The steamer City of Sydney was delayed to wait for the Australian mail overland, and further delayed till the 20th by damage from fire, which broke out in the forehold on Saturday night, the 13th. The cargo was a good deal injured, but the damage to the vessel was small. It will be covered by £SOO. ..•:■.'"
The Minister of Police of Tonga, accompanied by the Rev. S, Baker, of Tonga, paid a visit to the Police Court, to witness the raannei' in which business was conducted. Both gentlemen were accommodated with seats on the Bench, and appeared to take considerable interest in the cases that came before the Bench. Captain Colbeck addressed a crowded meeting of his constituents at Waipu, and began by saying he had been unable to hold a meeting earlier. A vote of thanks was carried by acclamation. SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB RACES, Timaru, April 8. The weather was anything but favorable for the racea. A drizzling rain fell during the greater part of, the night, and intermittingly through the day. "While making matters unpleasant for spectators, it rather improved the course, which was in splendid order, The attendance was hot so large as last year, 2,500 at most being present, With the exception of the Timaru Cup, no good contests took place, the cracks making their own terms. The book-> making element mustered very strong, but little was done in the betting market. The following are the results:—> Trial Stakes—Mata, 1; Hummiugton, 2. Marie Antoinette and Volunteer were scratched. Mata won in a canter.

Tiuiaru Handicap Cup of 250 sovs., with a sweepstake of 3 sovs.; If miles—Betrayer, 1 ; Titauia, .2. Camballo, Luna, and Marie Antoinette started, Mata being scratched. A grand race between Betrayer and Titania, the former winnning by a length. Time, 3 mins. Flying Handicap—Mata, 1 ; Tera, 2. Humming ton also started, Mata won easily by a neck.
